By Robyn Marsh

Natural hairstyles for black women is a rising trend and indicates that more and more women are quite literally embracing their roots. However, while the harsh straightening chemicals brought their own problems, the difficulty of transitioning from chemically relaxed hair to natural hair as it's own challenges.

The phrase 'good hair' and 'bad hair' has always been used among the black community to differentiate between a women's preferences for style and texture. The fact is, there is not 'good hair' and 'bad hair' just good hair care practices and bad hair care practices.

The condition of your hair speaks volumes about how you treat it. Now that more and more women are embracing natural hairstyles, companies are responding by providing treatments that help women achieve amazing quality hair and beautiful natural hairstyles.

But finding the right products can be a headache. There are so many to choose from. The best natural hairstyles for black women will always involve getting the basic rights. Proper shampooing and conditioning with organic, low sulphate products is the best place to begin. These will keep the hair moisturized.

Despite the growing strength of the natural hair care movement, many women continue to apply chemicals to straighten their hair. But chemical relaxers can make the hair more porous leading it to dry out quickly, break and shed more rapidly. This will worsen with exposure to sun. A simple solution to this is a leave in conditioner that can be sprayed on hair.

All evidence is pointing the rise in the number of women embracing natural hair. A recent study showed that 36 per cent of African American women has stopped using chemicals and were opting for natural hairstyles. Once this trend continues, companies will capitalize by introducing products and treatments to make hair management easier.

Transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair can be traumatic. Women have the choice of going to the extreme and simply cutting all of the permed hair out so natural hair can grow or living with the permed hair at the end of natural hair while it grows in. The point where permed hair joins natural hair can be weak and breaking is often inevitable. Careful combing and conditioning will help minimize damage.

Using treatments and products designed to protect and condition hair will also help while going through the transition. While the whole experience can be traumatic, the end result is often worth it. Natural hairstyles can look beautiful and liberate you from the headache of chemically treating your hair.
